Mobile Internet is comming in big steps. Many of us are uderestimating the impact it will have on our life and economy. Imagine 1991 when first GSM call was made people did not understand how somebody should or would use this technology not mentioning the machine-to-machine messaging feature called SMS!
Let me show you some facts. According to recent studies of Morgan Stanley already in 2010 we are reaching the inflection point of smartphone penetration globaly (21% in 2010) from which prolifaration of such devices should grow massively. In 2011the number of new smartphones sold will outgrow regular featurephones. Ericsson estimates that smartphones in Poland will reach 33% in 2014. New smartphones arriving on the market in 2011 will be LTE enabled allowing always-on connectivity at speeds exceeding 20Mb/s. Already in 2014 globaly there will be more mobile ousers than desktops accesing internet sites and services. There will be 10x (est 10 bln) devices connected to the net then in the Desktop Internet era.
We will face one of biggest paradigm shifts technology had so far (desktop computing, client-server, Internet, social-networks). Each of them gave soil for new stars to rise, eg Microsoft, Oracle, Google or Netscape to name just a few leaders.
Imagine what the potential of Mobile Internet is. New always connected services, hosting most in the cloud, location aware, instant access to all information, powerful computer augmented reality, mobile commerce ?
One of leading players of Mobile Internet prooves to be Android which market share shows exponential growth now at more then 25%, while Apple iOS stopped at 17%. However we are at the very begining of new era and lot will change.
So go to work and start developing services and applications for the mobile era. Start enabling mobile formats of your stores. Work on cloud services. Or you will see the train fly by, again.
